Question
Hi, I am having trouble figuring out why my Gaggia is no longer making coffee the way it used to. the coffee is now coming out with a more acrid burnt flavour despite not having changed coffee brands. I suspect that the water may be too hot and it also might not be flowing strongly enough creating twin conditions water being of too hot and too long a contact time with the coffee but I am at a loss figuring out how to fix this. The machine is descaled, the pump appears to be working properly and if I just pass water through with no coffee the water runs freely (although I cant test the pressure. Any advice welcomed. Thanks.

The problem might be with the filter basket if it is a pressurized (double layer) one, otherwise it can be caused by limescale or any kind of residue that is blocking the flow of water, or it can also be the caused by a faulty thermostat. You can check the thermostat by turning the machine on and opening the steam knob when the machine reached operating temperature. If you get steam coming out of the wand but it stops after a few seconds, then the thermostat should be fine, however if you experience that steam is coming out at a high pressure and for more than 10 seconds, then the thermostat is most likely faulty. After this test I would recommend to take the whole machine apart, clean and descale every bit, dismantle and clean the solenoid valve as well or rather especially the solenoid valve, replace all gaskets and assemble the machine to see if it helped. If you still experience the problem, then it's either the filter basket or the pump that's giving you trouble.
