Question
Espresso comes out extremely weak and watery, filter basket ok, tried several different grinds. I've noticed that the water runs through shower disc (recently replaced, centre screw is tightened) at a very high flow rate resulting in more or less a steady high volume stream of water coming through, whereas before it was a spray of water similar to a bathroom showerhead. Hope that makes sense, any advice would be greatly appreciated.

The shower disc is meant to have two main purposes, one being the even distribution of water throughout the surface, the other is preventing ground coffee from entering the water system. A fast water flow through the brew head is not necessarily a bad thing. The resistance, which should slow the flow down and against which the pump can build up pressure, should be created by the ground coffee puck. Fineness and quantity need to be right, but differ with bean types, roasting method and quality. Tamping is also essential with traditional filter baskets. If you have ruled these things out, then the problem might be with the temperature or water pressure. Unfortunately for more exact information, we would need to see the machine.
