Question
The screen is blinking blank on and off. If I lift the coffee bean lid, it will eventually (after many tries) go into self test mode... It will sit there blinking self test for a while and do some false starts before finally starting and working fine until the next day. When you hit the standby key the next morning, it does it all over again. I am not sure if this is a magnetic issue or if there is some way to reset the computer? Or if the main control board is going...

It has nothing to do with the coffee bean lid.
Firstly please check the continuity in both cable going down to the gearbox motor while moving them a bit. Remember to disconnect them before testing.
You should read the same consistent ohm measurement.
If that is fine then it is a CPU fault but it cannot be reset. We would find the fault if we inspected the unit.
